Question How do I install an older kernel?

Hi. I want to install the 2.6.12-586tsc kernel on a 3.4-3 MEPIS box. When I try in apt-get this is the error I get:
Errors from apt-get:

apt-get install linux-image-2.6.12-1-586tsc
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
linux-image-2.6.12-1-586tsc: Depends: initrd-tools (>= 0.1.78) but it is not installable
E: Broken packages

Errors from Synaptic are similar.

When I installed MEPIS and GRUB, I left initrd disabled (the default option) because the Help tab said only to enable it if I was sure I needed it. How can I install the MEPIS kernel 2.6.12? Do I need to enable initrd somehow?
