how do I download and enable the Opera browser?

Hi,

Opera doesn't seem to be listed in the repositories. I downloaded directly from the Opera website but can't find where it downloaded to on my system. I selected the tarball option from the website

I'm using SimplyMepis 8.5.03. I've used the 'find files' function but that doesn't find it either.

I'd appreciate some help here, please

Add the Opera repo or download the .deb

Well, thank you for your reply craigevil. Wish I could understand what it is about...

Anyway, I opened a terminal (with which I am totally unfamiliar) and entered the commands for the stable version of Mepis 8. All was going well until I found that the single stroke upright needed (a vertical slash, if you see what I mean) didn't work on my UK keyboard.

But I carried on only to find that Opera still did not reside in the repositories.

Ain't there an easier way?

All seems okay now. I found the download in Dolphin file manager.

Thanks for your input. One day I might just get into the nuts and bolts of Linux but, at the moment, I can only cope with the easiest of things.

betula,
In the future when you first download Opera on a new install, download the deb file. This will download to the "Download Folder" in MEPIS 8.5, click on it and this will take you to gdebi.
gdebi will install Opera for you, make sure Opera repository is enabled in Synaptic and it should update along with your other updates after that.
Just a simpler way of doing things.

Thank you Wayne. That is easier, isn't it...
