Having problems with graphical interface, video card issue?

I have a problem with an Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS, I could not enter the graphical interface, I tried ctrl, alt, F7 and got a blank screen. I can however, work in the command line. I am not very familiar with what commands I could use to find the linux driver for this video card. Would anyone suggest a place where I could find troubleshooting methods? I apologize in advance for a duplicate thread, I noticed that a similar thread was started, I figured since I couldn't get into graphical mode it'd be a different issue. Would anyone be able to elaborate on reinstall X? And how would I do that from command line, or can I use the live DVD to do this? I've been looking all over for a tutorial but haven't had much luck. Thanks.

Joe from Atlanta

The GeForce 7600 GS is supported by the Linux drivers at http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-9746.html so you could install those. There are instructions on the site on how to get/run the installer and it also can modify your xorg.conf file for you.

I'm not sure what Mepis specific nvidia support there is - probably someone else here will answer that...

Can I install it in the command line mode? Or should I do it using the live DVD, if so how do I mount and save the driver?

Yes, but not from a terminal with the GUI running. I assume that the non-GUI mode for Mepis is runlevel 3. If so, as root, you can run telinit 3 and install from there. It may be possible by booting with the install disk, but you shouldn't need to (I haven't tried it that way).
