Have tried to change to inittab 5
... you mean you tried to change to runlevel 5? How? By editing /etc/initab?

Have you tried editing the bootloader configuration file (i.e. /boot/grub/menu.lst)
... a 5 on the kernel line will boot you into graphical multiuser mode.

But it sounds like the greeter isn't coming up.

su -c 'kcontrol'
... make modifications from there.

Smile Getting a gui back

Look at the pages on this link. It is a page by page, picture by picture guide that shows how to do a dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. I know you don't need this info but the first few pictures from the guide will help you. The first few pages deals with going from a gui log in to a console type log in. You just need to follow the guide, doing the reverse of what it says to do, so instead of changing a 5 to a 3 you will be changing a 3 to a 5. It's pretty simple.
