Guarddog Firewall Warning re Thunderbird
Some email systems use port 587 for SMTP. If you find you cannot send email, go to the terminal, run guarddog, type in the root pwd for your system, wait for guarddog to start, (a GUI console will come up) click the "advanced" tab, "new protocal", type in smtp in lower case in the name field, (there is already a SMTP in upper case) then type in 587 in the left ports field. Click the "protocal" tab, scroll down to the user defined section, expand it, then check the box for smtp.
You will now be able to send email. I thought I was having some sort of PGP problem so I chased that for a few hours, as I have never seen a PGP set up dialogue in Thunderbird before. Hopefully this post will save someone from making angry, disparaging remarks while trying to figure it out.
