Unhappy grub error 17

I had a hard disk failure, and I am trying to install mepis 3.4-3rc1 on an 8 gb pen drive. After I installed it I rebooted and instead of booting grub gave me error 17.

Here is the result of fdisk -l and menu.lst
root@1[demo]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 8021 MB, 8021606400 bytes

initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.15-1-586tsc

Is there any fix?

You can insert your Livew Cd and re-install grub.

grub-install /dev/sda

I got an error message

grub-install /dev/sda
Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time.
sed: can't read /boot/grub/device.map: No such file or directory
grep: /boot/grub/device.map: No such file or directory
/dev/sda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive.

I was able to install macpup on this drive and boot from it at one point but I accidently rewrote the live cd.

It is an award bios on and amd athlon 2006 model. I can also mount this drive and find /boot/grub/device.map

It says

(hd0) /dev/sda
