After no responses from Maxtor on the brand new 200 Gig hard drive I bought
that came with a "partitionapper." This drive came with software to prepare it for a WINDOWS or Macintosh PC. Once it was installed, it wrote a "partition overlay"
to the first partition to boot the PC. This was why I couldn't get GRUB to install.
I kept the drive and tossed the "Overlay." Now I have grub working. I can live without those 2 Windows Only apps and tossed Win 2K off into Cyberspace.

Congratulations! You have to be amazed at the ease of use of Mepis. The Linux community, with seemingly endless forums and tutorials, make the transition fairly smooth.
