I am running Mepis 6.5.02 and think i have a problem with gnome sound.
Here's what I did.
I installed mepis then installed gnome (apt-get install gnome) and fluxbox the same way. When I first logged into gnome the gdm sound (a bongo sound or something) kept playing over and over like it was locked in a loop or something. Gnome finally locked up and I had to press the reset button.
Sound works in fluxbox and kde but I cannot log into gnome any more. Gnome shows my wallpaper but no loading gnome splash screen or error message.
What I would like to know is how to find gnome errors.
My specs are asrock dual core vsta motherboard, a intel dual core 2.13 cpu and a midiman audiophile 2496 souncard.
I would read /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what's going wrong. If you can't figure anything else out, remove everything under your homedirectory's .gnome2 (maybe .gnome too if it exists):
