I have created my dual boot workstation using xp pro and mepis linux. Now I want to be able to have the Mepis login logon to my domain directly, or do I have to login locally then do something? This is where I am lost.
Please correct me if I am wrong, which is a strong possibility as I am new to Linux, but isn't Samba if you are using Linux as a server or sharing files from linux?
Samba is more general than that. It is for all Lin-Win interactions involving the smb, now cifs, protocol. Browsing in either direction, workgroup, domain, & AD -- including logins.
Distribution: Mepis and Fedora, also Mandrake and SuSE PC-BSD Mint Solaris 11 express

Samba
With Samba, you can be either a client or server. I would recommend logging in as root to set up a Samba account or share. To Windows, it will probably look like you are a NT or a Windows 2000 machine. This is a good reason to update to Mepis 6.5. Depending on the functional level of the domain and the version of Samba, you may or may not be allowed to join. The higher the functional level is, the harder Samba will have joining. For example, Windows 2000 can't join a domain set at 2003 functional level.
Good luck. Remember, Microsoft keeps changing active directory to boot older versions of Windows and Unix or Linux users off. Also, XP media center and XP home can't join a domain either. You may end up using XP Professional or Vista Business to get on this domain. Vista Ultimate also can join a domain. Vista Enterprise is hard for the private user to find.
I am installing Samba, and will see what happens? We are at Windows 2000 Native for a functional level on a server 2003 box.
Thank you

I am trying to logon to a windows domain network with an active directory account.
Perhaps you can explain how you use Mepis to logon to the Windows domain network manually, then these folks can understand what you want implemented automatically.
How do you logon to the windows domain network Manually with Linux? I have not been able to access the network drives at all with Mepis 6.5 yet.
Thank you,
Steve
