Digital Camera + MEPIS = ???
Has anyone here used a digital camera with MEPIS 7.0 as the OS?
If yes, then:
1) Did you have any trouble transfering data to / from your computer to / from your digital camera?
2) Did you have to make any special downloads or updates for the transfer process to work?
3) Somewhat related . . . GIMP is too time consuming to learn for people with simple photo viewing / editing needs like my mom. Any viewer / editer suggestions?
Thanks!

Not MEPIS but chances are OK if the device doesn't need any exotic or custom modules and can be seen as say USB mass storage device. In that case all you do is plug it in and configure the mountpoint. If that's an insufficient answer maybe post more details. And what does "simple photo viewing / editing needs" mean? Scaling, rotating, cropping? Or also applying filtering like red eyes and such? And (with all due respect) what is timeconsuming on a scale of GIMP and giving birth and raising someone? :-]

For photo viewing / editing: It doesn't need to be as full featured as Adobe PS or GIMP but yes, those basic things you mentioned would be needed (scaling, rotating, etc) but it would also be nice to have the ability to "save as" into different file types. For example: save from tif to jpg, etc.
Basically, I am trying to discover what photo viewing / editing software is available for Linux and their respective features....where can I find such info?

Viewers like Xnview can do all of that. An URI of a comparison of viewers I don't have. Note some DEs allow you to make "scriptlets" of sorts, so you could probably have some menu entry or desktop icon that reads "drop here to conver to jpeg" and run a convert (Imagemagick) script behind the screens...

I assume you're running the default KDE. I put 'image view' (w/o quotes) in the search bar of KPackage & got a nice list of ~20 packages. An old favorite, kuickshow, was not found, but is available. It isn't found because it's described as an "image/slideshow viewer" & that doesn't match the search string. Xnview is not found at all.
Another approach is to use Wikipedia -- I fed it 'image viewer' & got: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_viewer That in turn had a link to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari..._image_viewers which may be exactly what you are asking for.
