I know a ranted a little bit, but take yourself back to the time you tried finding a suitable distro for you, only to not find very basic facts to determine better whats for you, and just get, try them all from people.
It's frustrating, I ranted a little bit because of that, it's not aimed at you but more showing my experience for others to see, and perhaps realise, and change how they deal with newbies, or rather, the majority of people, just wanting a quick, easy to use, Operating System.
aysiu you've been great, yes your right that quiz is very good, and I'm simply saying really, that there's a huge need for helpful things like that, and helpful people like you, that are less blazay and un specific, more tuned into helping guide people to the right choice for them based on factual knowledge of the key differences between distro's and a few factors as to what the user needs, or they're OS and other backround, and that type of usage on other OS's, programs etc.
Thats what that quiz does well, and thats what you do well, so thankyou, its just also frustrating like you say, that those helpful sides are not as apparent as could and should be, meaning a huge waste of time on other content, research etc.
As for helping newbie's, yes I will in-light of this, I will practice what I preach, as I know there are thousands out there like me whom are increasingly intrigued about Linux, believe it may well be better for them than they're current OS (usually XP) and I want to help those people a little better, in said ways, then is being done now. Why? Because I believe Linux is more than ready for the desktop for a very many computer users, and they're simply not taking the leap from one platform to another, because instead of one nice big platform for them to jump to, we've got hundreds of little ones, with no signs for them as to which one to jump to.
These aren't new complaints either.
I want Linux to succed but it wont if people just advise trying distro's as if the entire human race are choice and distro junkies, they're not, they just want something that works. Linux can work for them, but we need to encourage and help that with the kind of quizes like above, clear factual content that Linspire offers at its sight, and decent advice like you've given.

Sorry. I got a bit defensive, but I understand the need to blow off steam.
I don't have to "take [my]self back"--I just started with Linux only four months ago myself. I had to try out twelve distributions before settling on Mepis and Ubuntu (if you can call using two distros "settling").
I'm glad you're going to try to make a difference.
Nothing infuriates me more than people saying "Use whatever works for you."
That line doesn't help in any facet of life (picking a college, buying a car, etc.). Everyone has specific needs and shouldn't have to try everything out there.
Good luck in the practicing what you preach. It's lonely out there...
P.S. You'll find a lot of people out here hate Linspire (many do not even consider it a "true" Linux distribution), but I think it's part of the wonderful diversity out there that makes Linux great, and it suits the needs of many curious about the world of Linux. I won't use Linspire myself (tried it once), but when people complain about "Oh, why can't Linux be more like Windows? Why can't it 'just work'? Why do I have to use the command-line?" I just point them to Linspire: "there's your distro."

I really don't get why a quite few Linux supporters, are so anti some things. Do they want to see Linux succeed and better peoples computing life, or not?
Many say they do, but really I think many like being part of an elite so they think, and hate Windows, and hate anything remotely like it.
That just isnt helpful. Linux can be whatever the user wants it to be pretty much, like any other OS really, and what is wrong with that? That is a huge benefit to shout about and win users over, regardless.
But instead, even people are funny with Linspire? It's just so telling.
I gotta say I'm an avid Firefox supporter and contributor to its bug reporting, helping users, helping promote it etc, and want Linux to help Firefox, Firefox to help Linux, and Linux and Firefox become a huge successes, and benefit huge majorities of people. Both are worthy of that, but how its being done, is not yet worthy of many users adoption.
That is why software is made, to benefit people. Yet many Linux users dont seem to want that no matter what they might say. They just get off on being different, mysterious, complicated, and that's sadly why the great and varied product that is Linux, is not getting to benefit as many people as it should, yet Firefox is.
Anyway, again thanks so much for your help and time, I appreciate it. I'm trying to download bit torrents of Mepis as we speak, but both seem to be stuck. I'm not gona say a thing, I'm sticking with this, but I also know these kind of factors like that and noted here are why many aren't even considering Linux, it has a bad name sometimes, and why many who consider/try it, get fedup and leave, what a shame...
Anyways, many thanks! ;-)
