Question Can not install GRUB

I was installing SimplyMepis From step 1 through step 4 and was doing fine so I thought now in step 5 I tried to install GRUB into the MBR (MASTER BOOT RECORD). When An ERROR comes up that says sorry installing GRUB has failed. New root file system may be faulty. Could you please tell me what to do to fix The root file system or what can be done so that I can install Linx/mepis with out that GRUB problem? I am useing Version 2004.06. PS This is something new to me. Thank you so very much Bosslady415

MBR should be on /dev/hda1, first partition/hard drive.

Is there another OS installed?

I'm not familar with external drives but does your Bios support booting from a USB device if it is USB?

Install a bootloader on the USB harddrive, I like "grub" but some use "LILO". Make linux one boot choice and windows the other.

Try a GRUB Boot Floppy

You may find it easier to use a GRUB boot floppy.

Go back to the MEPIS install utility, and have it install GRUB to your root partition, instead of to your MBR.

Then go to the following link to make a GRUB boot floppy:

(Make sure that your BIOS is set up to boot first from a floppy).
