Can't get MePis to INSTALL

Hi all
I seriously dunno what im doin wrong. I just can't seem to get MepIS installed. I badly due to the positive stuff i hear abt it and the minimal fuss free configuration. I sure don't want to learn like crazy just to use an OS.

Anyways, i am able to boot the CD(although have experienced some weird issue where just after the screen says loading grub stage 2, the system reboots), picked 2.6 kernel and i tot im off to a new life as a free linux dude. The screen shows Mounting File system....done. Then, it just hangs there for a looooOOooOoong time b4 it shows this error:

awk: fatal error: internal error
IOT trap
Total RaM: kB

I don't have any trouble running Ubuntu & i dun tink its the memory since i found no errors using memtest(although i quit after waiting for eternity for the tests to complete). I have no idea what causes this and this problem seems unique to my set up. Perhaps its the CD, i dunno, will seriously appreciate assistance of any helpful geeks our there.

Thanks in advance.

P.S: In ubuntu, i dunno y in my synaptic, i can't find KDE Desktop Manager to install. Typing the commands thru terminal doesn't seem to help either. Any ideas? How do we get Ubuntu to look like windows; i mean the fonts seems to big and u can hardly manage with such limited desktop space.

Mepis Install Problem

Sorry can't help you out with Ubuntu.
Re Mepis, you could have a bad CD. You may want to try one of those services that sell CD's inexpensively, rather than installing from an ISO.

You also might try the 2.4 kernel instead of the 2.6.

HTH.

There are some machines Mepis just will not work on. I've had several E-Machines and a couple of Compaqs so far that would do nothing. These same machines load Knoppix just fine.

Hi

I tried reburning mepis on a cdrw and it works, guess its a bad burn. Sorry for the trouble.

New Problem:

After installing mepis my windows OS doesn't appear in the grub menu somehow. I did a fix from one of the help in mepis.org & now the system just stays at the command prompt upon booting mepis & does not load into kde mode.
i.e. (My comp name) Login:_________ << I entered my login name then my password and it just stays at the command prompt.

Additionally, I installed the nvidia drivers from the OS menu just b4 rebooting.

Any Ideas??

Also, I wonder y mepis & other distros such as ubuntu look a bit bad. I mean fonts aren't smooth enough etc.
Is there anyway I can all the words and stuff appear like in windows?
I heard there's sth we could install.

Thx in advance.
