Book about Mepis
 

What book is recomended to educate this Linux newbie,{me} using mepis 6.0 ?

On the desktop should be a Mepis user manual
Rather go to web pages around than buy a book ,pages are free and often updated ,books are mostly obsolete when they are published in computing.

Any old second hand red hat books or others are cheap because of this and one can be an aid after you have a basic understanding of your system , only because you can then study things which hav'nt changed much like command line commands (programs) and grub , logs . permissions etc

Unfortunately, the one book about SimplyMEPIS (Point & Click Linux, by Robin Miller) is way out date -- it uses ver. 2004.04 -- & will NOT be revised & re-issued. It was one of the few books whose pictures matched the distro on the CD in the back. It's also the only computer book I've ever read that had the "can't put it down" quality of a good novel.

Marcel Gagné's Moving to Ubuntu Linux might be close because SimplyMEPIS now uses the Ubuntu repositories; but it, Ubuntu, defaults to the Gnome desktop & the book reflects this; while SimplyMEPIS still defaults to KDE & the book does not devote much more that a chapter to it. Furthermore, SimplyMEPIS uses a traditional root acct., while the whole Ubuntu distro family "prefers" sudo.

Marcel's older book, Moving to Linux, 2nd ed. might be more useful, since it is not distro specific & assumes the KDE desktop. It is, however, beginning to age. It and P&CL might be good values 2nd hand.

Mepis for the Mac?

I would like to read the book that Bontoogobeanso wrote of. So I clicked on the link provided, but I was not taken to anything that resembled a book, at least to me. Please advise me, with steps to get to that book, I really want to read it and have by my computer!

Afaik the only way to download that guide at this moment is to be a member of mepislovers.com. There is a download link (for the book) inside the link Bontoogobeanso provided, it just wasn't visible to you. It's only visible to logged in members.

I believe the reason for this is ko considers the book to be a work in progress.

Join mepislovers perhaps? If there is another link to this book I'm not aware of it. I can think of other ways to get it to you, but will not do so without ko's permission.

the "book" is in HTML format, suppose you could print it, but it is really meant to be read in a browser.

edit// the reason I put "book" in quotations is at 240KB it really is simply a guide. Most of what is in the guide can be found on the Mepis wiki. You might also enjoy this site;

Thanks for the info, found it very helpful. However, I am a member of mepis lovers, i sign in here at this site each time and it says welcome each time. I did see a blue hyperlink in Bontoogobeanso's message, and I did click on it, and that is as far as I was able to get, or maybe I was looking at it and did not recognize it??? I doubt that . So now what is the next step?

Being a member at linuxquestions.org does not make you a member a Mepislovers.com. I just checked the member list at mepislovers and there is no member named Flywelder. Now it's possible you registered there under a different name, but honestly I think you're misunderstanding.

Clicking on the link provided by Bontooogobeanso should have taken you to a page at the mepislovers forum. On that page you will find posts by member ko. In one of ko's posts is a link to download his guide. The download link is only available to logged in members. Members of mepislovers, not members of linuxquestions. If you are not a member of mepislovers the download link (for the guide) will not be visible.

Hope that clears it up. I can't think of another way to explain.

Thanks Muddy waters! I understood when you wrote " the link should take you to a posting for KO....." that is when I knew what happened.
SO I went and joined mepis lovers and glad I did...however, I clicked on the link in Ko's posting and nothing happened? I tried 6 times...nothing. I was still looking at a page with people's postings ...one having a tea pot brewing.
please send me a link to it or tell me the steps or hold my hand and walk me through ..please. Thank you and thank you for patiently working with me as I am very new and green to mepis...or any Linux program.

Hello Flywelder - The link in ko's post doesn't show up until I'm logged in as a member. I just tried it and it's invisible when not logged in, visible after I log in. You should be able to see a little green paper clip with Mepis-Howtoguide-1.0b3.tar.gz in blue next to it. If I left click on that, a prompt box comes up and asks if I want to open or save the file. I saved it so that I can read it anytime. Does that work for you? If not, try right clicking on the link and in the prompt box choose "save target as", then choose where to download it to your computer. I did this on my wife's Windows computer, so I hope it works for you. My Linux computer is turned off and it's time for bed.

It's as bontoogobeanso (man that's hard to spell) says. One more thought. Creating a mepislovers account is not as quick as creating a linuxquestions account, or at least it wasn't for me. Try logging in again.

I just tried it on my Linux laptop and I have to be logged in to even see the tar.gz file. Right click, "save target as" works the same as my Windows computer.

tell me about download history
 

I downloaded allot of music this month. When I open the file foe each song I see there is a button that says ..I think it says, "clear all download history"

I have never clicked on that button.... I think I should now but don't know where to find this button now that I am not downloading music.

Do you think I should somehow open this program, and click on clear all download history, and that will be a plus to my computer's ram memory? Or does this happen
automatically ?
