Automatix for Mepis 6?
 

Hello, Does anyone out there know if I can still get automatix for Mepis 6?
I had it before but now I've re-installed Mepis I find that the automatix website only caters for the ubuntu distros 7. I can't get on with mepis 7 (debian anyway) it won't recognise my usb mouse. Any ideas??

I was under the impression that using Synaptic in Simplymepis was good and automatix was quite useful in munging up a Mepis system...

Installing Automatix will load software from outside of the Mepis repositories, Things not packaged for Mepis and you will have a broken install.

Since it takes 15 minutes to re-install depending on your printer and hard drive partitions guess you could locate the correct repository for Automatix and install...

I have two systems running Mepis 7 & one running 6.5, all with USB Mice... They are a generic brand laser mice made in Thailand, I purchased them from Big Lots, @ $5.99 just before Xmas... I have always used BTC brand Laser mouse, priced from $5.00 - $10.00. They last about a year, before they get horrid/dirty and need tossing, or the Teflon pads wear off...

I have never had a problem using a USB mouse on a desktop, or notebook running SimplyMepis 6.5, or 7...

I guess you are more familiar with 6, so you are returning to a distor version u are comfortable using...

Have never run Mepis 6, so maybe someone else might have a solution, or saved a mepis build of Automatix...

Seems there is no longer any support for mepis6 at Automatix...

Yes, I have heard that automatix breaks systems but I've used it several times and never experienced problems; it sorts out dependencies and makes installation of video codecs etc very simple. As to the usb mouse, it's a very standard Logitech Genius - mepis 7 doesn't see my usb printer either so I imagine that it's a problem with finding the usb controllers.
You're right about my being comfortable with mepis 6. My big gripe about Linux distros is that while some are superb at some applications few seem to do all I want (and it's not that much) mepis 6 was one of the few; I should never have removed it.
I'm going back to zenwalk now as it's another of the few and it comes ready loaded with the apps I want.

Sorry, starkadder, I have no help, only sympathy. Well, maybe some wry thanks for providing an object lesson, for me & those who follow:

(Rick's) Rules of Upgrading

1. Always do a fresh install
   
2. Always run the new side by side with the old for a conservatively reasonable period of time. *
   
3. Never remove the old install until you are sure the new is satisfactory.

I'm getting ready to try 7, & I'll not abandon 6 until I'm completely happy w/ 7.

* In 1963, this was 6 months for a bank loan department converting from manual (NCR) to computer (IBM 1401) General Ledger.

I just watched a PC mag video with Patrick Norton, promoting automatix2 for Ubunta, and indicating it runs on a number of other distro's including Mepis...

But on their automatix website they only list 3 distro (several verisons), and one of the three is closed link for mepis6

Tis interesting, the research for this was not good, as Partick was fun to watch and a good side kick for Leo, when ZDTV was a daily broadcast in my household.

Never mind, I'm happy with zenwalk 5.0 (I've always had a soft spot for slackware).

PS. I lost the skin from my fingertips on overhead telephone wires in the winter of 62-63 and it was an entertaining time for motorcycling!

Lots of work accomplished here in the few hours alloted outside of work this week... I find mepis 7 64-bit to be a good operating system...

Yes, a few extra things need to be added as they are not in the repositories: Pidgin 2.2.2_amd64, Pan_0.132_amd64, pdfedit_0.3.2_amd64_mepis1, and Larry's new splashy theme... The other one I would like to find is a more recent Gimp to get the Healing Brush tool that has been in Photoshop since version 7.

1. Linux only Brisbane x2 3600 AMD box sold, Installed XP and added a fresh install of Mepis 7... Nice lower power dual boot system with 2 gigs of memory, on-board video, sound and a 80gig sata drive...
2. Moved ESC GeForce6100SM-M motherboard & Brisbane x2 4400 AMD from main case to a mid size housing, and reused hard drive with Mepis 7 install.
3. Installed ECS A770-A Motherboard & 9500 Quad AMD to Server Case. Diamond ATI X1650 pro, in PCI-E, 4 gigs of 6400 Ultra Memory and 320gigs Hard drive ready for Mepis 7 install when 500W Power Supply arrives.
4. Cleaned two XP machines of malware, and Sony rootkits, defragged and installed Mepis 7 as a dual boot for a friend as a test for his family's use.

Mepis 7 works well in the ECS GeForce6100SM-M, but I an seeing the ECS GeForce 7050SM-M Offered in low cost Fry's Electronic combo's with AMD's be2300, and 4800 dual processors. I have not tried the 7050SM-M motherboard with a Mepis7 install, but plan to try one if they are on sale this week...
