assigning a swap partition after installation
Is this even possible? I installed everything to one partition. Today someone told me that it would be better if I had a swap partition. I have plenty of unpartitioned space I could use to make a swap partition, but how do I get Mepis to use it? I've already installed the OS. Or does it not even matter, and I can live without a swap. I'm using a 3ghz computer with 512mb of ram.

i actually already wrote the entire post, but i think i shall rather point you to the right places where you can find information.
have a look in the LQ wiki pages ( http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Swap)
or google, either on google.com or google.com/linux
where googe.com/linux will be more helpful to you. (this is not always the case, even when searching for linux topics)
dont get me wrong. i would want you to read and find the stuff yourself, so that you know how to possibly find the next solution to your questions yourself.

What's the point of having a forum if all people are going to do is point you to long tutorials and google? I thought the point of a forum was to get personal help from other people. Anyhow, I'm glad someone on MepisLovers gave me the help I needed.

Do you have unallocated space on your drive? If so, all you have to do is use QTparted to create a partition of type "linux-swap", and reboot. Mepis should recognize it and use it as the swap partition. It should show up in /etc/fstab.

i think you might be missunderstanding me, and/or the word 'help'.
let me just explain:
there are 2 ways to help somebody.
when i read a post, where i believe the answer can be found very quickly by googleing or reading LQ's wiki, i will point someone tho those pages, just because this will help a peroson on how to find solutions themselves. if i google myself and cannot find an easy answer, i will post the answer.
there is a very important thing one needs to learn when working with linux
[u]you need to read[u] either man pages, pages on the web, and try to find a solution first...
always asking a person (or a forum) for help will make you 'adicted' to that place and you will not have enough confidence in your linux skills to solve issues yourself.
that is my oppinion and it works for a lot of people,
by the way: if you are to lazy to read article on how to solve the prob, are not thankful for sombody even finding those pages for you... why shoudl i go through th hassle of explaining what needs to be done, if not even the simples work/effort is appreciated?
