Application/Octet-Stream
Well, after trying several other distros and reading about how great the Mephis
distro was I thought ( OK, I know I shouldn't think) I would give it a try.
Mepis did a great job detecting my hardware, no trouble with internet access
found my printer all and all seems ok.
Now is where the question comes in, what is this warning box saying "Could Not
Find Mimi Type Application/Octet-Stream and how or what did I do to get this
to popup, better yet, how do I get rid of it.
Thanks to all,
Dooley

"could not find....octet-stream". This is how i fixed it. I opened Konqueror, went to Configure Konqueror > file associations. I added a new mime type under "application" Add the type "octet-stream" (without quotes). For description, just put "unknown" Choose any icon. Leave the other boxes blank.
Regards
Sharke

Thanks a bunch Sharke.
Your suggestion is working for now. I have no idea what I did to get
that popup to come up.
It must have been in the file association, as I was trying to get Fx
to work the way I wanted.
Again,
Thanks very much for taking the time to help.

Thanks!
As the previous poster, I had this problem as well and found this post. I figure I must have accidentally deleted octet-stream or something. Anyhow, thanks!

i have the same problem but this didn't work for me, when going to "configure konqueror" there are no buttons or anything just a blank sheet! So I can't add or delete anything there regarding the octet stream.
I've deleted ~/.kde and /tmp/*kde* but it's made no difference. arrggg. annoying, I can't use Konqueror at all

I got this problem often (almost every time I edit file associations). running this 3 commands solves the problem.
# root
update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
# user
rm ~/.kde/share/mimelnk/application/octet-stream.desktop
kbuildsycoca
maybe only one of the commands is necesary... hope it helps

this is nearly 2 years old, I can't even remember this problem...
perhaps if it happens in future or someone else needs this fix it will be a good thing though...
