apache - debian
Does anyone know how to install apache 1 with debian using apt-get?. The apache files are in a tar.gz archive on cd.
Also can grub be removed once it has been installed?

if you have apache on your disc. Why not copy the tar.gz file to the harddrive, unpack it and then install it ? And why do you want to remove GRUB ?

ok, why not use the apache repositories ? You can opt to install apache 1 instead of apache 2 if you like.
just apt-get install apache instead of apt-get install apache2
grub is your bootloader. DO NOT REMOVE IT. If you do not have a bootloader, you will render your operating system unbootable.

not sure how to copy the file to the hd, do you know the procedure or command to use?
about grub, previously I was experimenting with different linux distributions on a windows 98 se machine. When I
intalled debian linux I installed grub as the main boot option which replaced ms-dos. Does this mean that I cannot access the windows 98 se partition?

You can, by editting the grub.conf file. See the MAN page of grub for this. And as nephish above sayd. Too install apache 1 just do: apt-get install apache
This'll install apache 1 for you, without any troubles.

ubantu-server
Cheers for your support
The version of debian I had was the minimal boot version which needed me to grab
a certain number of files from the internet to proceed. As I didn't have
internet connection and didn't know how to configure the port manually that
didn't happen.
Might also be why I did not understand some of the suggestions you made.
At present I have had some advice about using the ubantu-server environment
[containing LAMP] which although not gui driven was easy to install.
Do you know of anyone who has a network / or a working server environment with
this distribution?

You can use LAMP on every distribution. I myself don't have ubuntu using LAMP. I did have Debian running LAMP.
