any password works?!

I've noticed that even when I make mistakes in typing in my password it still works. Is this normal? I'm sure its not. Can it be fixed?

nevermind - I just found out that any character you hit over the 8th character doesn't register. That's why when I was entering my password and then entering random keys afterwards, it was still able to go through.
