Question Adding Wallpapers

Hi!

I've been asked to install Linux on a friend's laptop in a hurry, so I picked a good ready-made Debian-based distro - Mepis. I had had a little experience with it as a curiosity to see what all the fuss over KDE was about, then decided I didn't like KDE and went to Debian Testing/Xfce... But to share Linux, quick-and-easy with newbies from Windows, I'll always think of Mepis!

Anyway... is the the "get more wallpapers" thing the only way to get new wallpapers, or can I download them from a favorite site... and when I do, what directory to I put them in?

Thanks,
Robin

I understand I can download them from anywhere and put them anywhere. But I'm not familiar with where they are stored in KDE.

In LXDE, for example, they're in usr/share/lxde/wallpaper. In Xfce they're put in usr/share/xfce4/backgrounds. Is there a similar folder for them in KDE?

Perhaps I should just install KDE on my own 'puter and play around with it...

Thanks for your replies though,
Robin

I have my downloaded wallpapers stored in /home/bret/Downloads/Wallpapers. I haven't used KDE in some years (I prefer gnome), but I believe both gnome and kde are setup similar when it comes to the wallpapers thing. You should just be able to select an image from any folder as your wallpaper

possibly /opt/kde4/share/wallpapers is the default folder. Not sure, just googled it

Thanks, everyone... I just might give KDE another go after a hardware upgrade. It looks gorgeous - especially in Mepis. Simple, elegant, faster than I expected. I feel so flighty sometimes, changing DEs but it's so cool to have the choice of so many different ones!

Mepis works awesomely on that ancient old laptop, by the way. My friend will be pleased, no doubt.

Thanks very much!

As I said above, you can store the image(s) you wish to use as background anywhere you have access on the system. If you bring up the Desktop Settings, you will see there is a Browse button under the wallpaper selector. This allows placement anywhere you like. I use pics from my own digicam. There is /home/myusername/pictures/whatweverdirectory/.

There is a /usr/share/wallpaper/other/directorys structure, if you want them to be available to all users on the system. Nothing forces you to use it.

Since I'm the main user, on the local system, I use the pics from my home directory. Any other user can do the same thing.

This is KDE-4-3.

In MEPIS 8, KDE 3.5.10:

Where it is
/usr/share/wallpapers/

How I found it
  1. ControlCenter, Appearance & Themes, Background
  2. Pick one w/ a short, unique name -- in this case "Stelvio"
  3. Code:
    locate stelvio
