Acer 3620's battery meter and modem won't work in Mepis 3.4.3

Friends,

I have Aspire 3620 with the following specifications:

- Intel Celeron M processor 370 1.5 GHz 400 MHz FSB, 1 MB L2 Cache
- INtel Graphics Media Accelerator 900
- 40 GB HDD
- DVD/CDRW combo
- 256 MB DDR2
- 802.11b/g Wireless Lan

My problem is that I wanted to install Mepis 3.4.3. I tried the Live CD and it seems fine. Configuring the Wifi is a breeze. I can't activate the battery monitor. The acpi seems to be not detected by SM 3.4.3. I've browsed the net for solutions and I don't know which one works without damaging the installation. Someone suggested to recompile the kernel and add some patches but its just complicated for me. What are my alternatives? Hope someone have the same unit that solved this problem. I hate to see my notebook turn off without my knowledge. Another problem is the modem. Everytime I connect, I get NO DIALTONE from the KPPP Dialer. The modem for my unit is AC 97 Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP (I got these details from WinXP hardware properties). It seems the 3.4.3 can detect the modem but won't connect. I also encounter problems from artsd. I see messages on the console. I really want to replace my WinXP with SM 3.4.3 but I wan't to solve all hardware compatibility issues. I hope someone out there can help me. Thanks

Acer uses a "Smart Battery" system which will not work in linux re the battery monitor without a recompiled kernel and a lot of fussing; there is no alternative that I'm aware of.

hi

hi there you can buy drivers for most populer types of modems but you have to pay not much though. you can not pay and use it at a slower speed

but i dont know the web site - sorry about that

I would give this a try, I once only use to get 4KB's through AOL

have alook around this site for winmodem drivers
it's been posted many times around in linuxquestons

I've downloaded the driver from www.linuxant.com and get the full 56kbps speed. I bought it for $ 19.99. Thanks.
