A firewall and limewire issue

hello,
I was having a problem connecting to limewire network until i disabled gaurddog firewall

How can i connect to the network with the firewall on?

I am using SimplyMEPIS 6.5
and running limewire from the java package (did not convert it using alien)

I would open guarddog and open a port for limewire. Look through limewires set up and see which port it wants to use then open that port up in guarddog.
