When my system crashed and I could not boot. I took the live DVD installed the OS, the updates took place automatically (once installed), my customisations took little time. I then downloaded my data from the Cloud. Other packages (not many), I installed when needed. The whole process took about one 1.5 hrs

Software problems?
Is there a particular application that won't launch or something of the like?
The first problem I had was not being able to boot. I re-installed, no idea what the problem was.
At a much later stage, I had a standard panel problem - the desktop kept crashing when clicking on a icon in the panel (it did recover). There was much debate about what the problem could be. At the end of the day, I deleted the panel, installed Cairo Doc, some other desktop widgets, and now have a clean looking desktop that is problem free - untill the next time.

Sometimes when you can't boot it's because the linux image can't be found by Grub. Not sure if that's what you had going on.
Cairo Doc is one of my favorites-
Glad to hear your fresh install is running well. Enjoy your system and the rest of the weekend.
