XFree86 won't start with recompiled kernel

I recompiled my kernel (2.6.3-9mdk) to not include the option EFI under file systems. This was necessary to get my g4 ipod to mount. The mounts now but I cannot start x at all when running the custom kernel.

The X error I get readis something like:
Fatal Server error: Requested Entity already in use!
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":00" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
Things I've checked so far:
-The current, working, kernel I'm using is 2.6.3-9mdk...this matches the sources i used to compile the custom one. The .config file I used was a modification of the one sitting there in the directory for 2.6.3-9mdk.
-X tries to open the same config file in both cases.
-There is only one modprobe.conf so i expect that the nvidia driver is getting inserted into the kernel on boot properly (how do i check this?)
-the X log shows that the extensions and mods are loaded and it even looks like its loading the even probes the cards for memory allocation stuff.
-I tried installing the nvidia amd64 drivers but that never works...i do remember that someone had precompiled drivers on their website that worked when i first installed everything but i can't find that website anymore.

What's weird about my setup:
I'm running mdk 10 rc1 for AMD64.
I have 2 video cards and 3 monitors (1 mon on AGP and 2 on a PCI...both geforce 5200)

Sorry this was a long post.
