My problem is this: Whenever Mandrake is booting, the screen fickers three times, and then proceeds into a command prompt. When I try to run startx, I get different errors (no image found, other one i cant remember off the top of my head).

When I first installed Mandrake on my machine, I had almost exactly the same problem (although the error was only "no image found
"). Im not sure exactly how I solved it, but I do remeber that I had to downgrade from Xfree 4.? to Xfree 3.3.?. When I tried to change my resolution/color depth on my desktop, and restarted the compter, I get the no image found error once again. I ran the drakx from the cd iso, and whenever I tried to change around the video card, xfree version, monitor (Viewsonic GS790), resolution, etc. I would always get "Error: Try to change some parmaters". (note: I did this like 5 times, always chooising the upgrade option on mandrake install)

Once I booted into the command prompt after the three flickers, I ran XFdrake, and have the exact same problem. I am a linux newbie, and I really need help on this!!!

Have you installed the Nvidia driver? You can get it from the Nvidia web site, it is really good and sorts out a lot of problems - especially the new release.

Well, I downloaded the nvidia drivers, but when I run it it says I need to install a linker. I downloaded binutils (the linker they ask for), but it says i need to install

for it to install. Is there any way I can install binutils (no, /usr/bin/ld is not a directory) from the Mandrake 9.2 ISO Cd's? Thanks in advance.

Solrules, it sounds like your trying to get your monitor to display something it can't or what xf86config says it can't. Likely to be the wrong bit res. Chop XF86Config (or XF86Config-4) and drop the default res to 24 or 16 bit.

They are set to a default depth of 16bits already. How can I go about getting the ld that I need to install the NVIDIA drivers that I need?

Ok, I got the NVIDIA drivers to run...but I still get "no screens found" if i run Xfree 4.3, and another error if I try to run Xfree 3.3 (I think)

Find out the refresh rates, the vertical and horizontal refresh rates, of your monitor. Make sure you have them correct or you could smoke it.

But after you have them try running the

xf86config

command.


This should get you to a text style vidio set up.

If everything you try fails try using the VESA driver for the vidio card untill you can install and use the new Nvidia drivers.

There is no need to reinstall or upgrade anything.

I got my Horizontal/Vertical Refresh rates from Viewsonic (30-95, 50-180) and put them into my config file. Still did not work, so i tuned down the refresh rates a little, but that still did not help. Got the new nvidia drivers to install, however I still get the same error (yes, I changed "nv" to "nvidia", although on the xfree site, it says 4.3 has support for Geforce 2 GTS with the normal "nv" driver, but that did not work either). Here, Ill post my COnfig files and all of you can find out whats wrong...

Well, this could be the source of the problem....I dont <i>have</i> a /dev/nvidia* directory, or even a file with nvidia in it in the /dev/ directory. What am I suppoed to do?

Try rerunning xf86config and choosing the VESA driver instead. Is a basic vidio driver common to all cards. This should get you a basic GUI possability.

Use xfree 4.? and the basic nv driver that comes with Mandrake. Taking the defaults works for me everytime.

Make sure you have the correct vidio memory for the card and make sure you are not sharing vidio memory in the bios.

After you have a working nv driven screen make sure you have to CORRECT kernel source installed. 9.2 does not come with the kernel source. Since you have not said if your getting a correct, no errors message from the NVidia installer I can only assume you are not using it correctly for now.
