Have been using Mandrake for 4 1/2 yrs, since 6 Apr 03, have been happy with 9.1
Decided it's time to blow off windoze & take the 20 gigs. Upgraded my motherboard Asus A7V8X-X with Nvida GenForce4, Athlon XP +2500, burned off the 3 cds for 9.2 - reformatted the drive installed 9.2
said it did not install Free86-server-4.3.23mdk.i586, so I reinstalled it - up came the wizard screen for kde, LOCKED, had to ctrl-alt-bksp, ended up into a terminal window, startx gave me error messages.

Short form:
(EE) Failed to load module :bitmap" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "pcidata" (module does not exist, 0)
Fatal server error

So I reloaded dependable 9.1 WRONG, Error messages on it also, so I did an upgrade for 9.2, it brought me to the same error messages.

I really need my computer back, can anyone suggest a course I can go on that will put me back in the drivers seat, I miss my computer, now that I have all the extra space - maybe

I grabbed the text 'pcidata' from your post and ran a google search on it. Found a lot of similar experiences.... Here's one that's also in english:

I recommend you research some of the discussions you'll find in Google about this. Additionally, here's a quick cut-n-paste from another post I made about troubleshooting X startup problems that are based on video card issues....

If your computer is 'frozen' with a black screen after everything loads, ssh in from another computer and as root do a 'reboot -p' rather than cycle the power on your computer. More healthy for the hard drive. Before you do the reboot, though, use the ssh terminal to edit /etc/inittab and change the run level from 5 to 3. After the reboot, you will not drop into the black screen hang. You will have a text-based-console to log into.

In the text-based console, you can run XFdrake as root and trial-and-error the night away with resolution and video card combos also adjusting whether you use 3-d acceleration or not. In my case, I had success without it. Once you've found a setting that tests ok with XFdrake, edit that /etc/inittab file back to 5 and reboot. You should have a working X.
