xemacs/ emacs conflict

I recently installed Mandrake 9.1 on a new machine and emacs went on as part of the basic install. Later I put xemacs on as part of the install for the Emacs Speaks Statistics frontend for the R statistics package. Everything was fine until I wanted to put Latex on, and then I got an emacs/ xemacs conflict error from the Mandrake control centre software installer (I know I should give the error messages here, but they're on a different machine and I don't have them today).

I thought the obvious thing to do would be uninstall emacs, since I don't need both editors, but the Mandrake control centre software remover doesn't see emacs, oddly enough, I guess because it was part of the base install (?). Anyway, I could uninistall emacs with rpm...

My question is, is that the right thing to do?

I got an emacs/xemacs conflict back in 7.1 and was advised to choose one or the other. I wonder how you got both installed, by forcing or installing a non-rpm package, or? Anyway, I can't make any promises but, in general, one or the other ought to be enough.
