Hy all,

I've just installed linux mandrake 9.1 on a old machine I've got.

The problem is that when i finish the intallation it boots to the commandline..

When I log in as Root and type "startx" I get this error message:

Using authority file /root/.Xauthority Writing authority file/root/xXauthority Using authority file /root/.Xauthority Writing authority file/root/xXauthority Execve failed for etc/X11/X (errno 13) giving up xinit: no such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

Maby it is because it hasen't got a very good video card ? I dunno ?

Can anyone help me pls...

thnx,

Other than telling you that Mandrake 9 is old and you should upgrade.

You may need to run xorgconfig or xf86config again and lower the refresh rate or resolution. Some vidoe cards are not compatable.

Look in the HCL.http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/

I've got a pent 2 350 mhz and a integrqted video card (32mb) on the motherboard...

I don't know if mandrake 10.1 will run on that so i first tried mandrake 9 ?

Does anyone know if 10.1 wil run on such a machine ?

Hi,

10.1 will run on that system and I assume that when you say 32mb you mean on the video card and not on the motherboard.

You should be able to get 9.1 up and running though. If you specified a high resolution then teckk is right. Try running the xf86config again and specify something like 800 x 600 for the screen.

You didn't say what kind of video card or chip is on the system but I believe that when the xf86config starts it should recognize that on it's own.

i've used mandrake 9.0 on a 486 but 9.1 was too buggy and didnt like the processor.. the processor i had was a 486 dx4-100. cirrus logic pci graphics card gl "5430"i think was the chip number.. loaded kde 2.? not kde 3.? which didnt like my museum piece.. so unless your from the good old days your should be able to load it.. by the way use ext2 or native as ext3 kills old 20 gb or less drives.. have fun..
