Unhappy X server hangs on nvidia splash screen

I just updated my 10.0 to 10.1 (community)

My kernel is 2.6.8.1

The nvidia driver is installed (6629)

If modify my Xconf file, replacing "nv" by "nvidia", as before, when I launch "startx" X *does* start. I get the Nvidia splash screen... and that's it. I have the Gnome hourglass turning for as long as I care letting it do so, and nothing happens.

I'm clueless.

Anyone ?

First if you haven't done so, reboot so that the correct newly updated libs get loaded and the system gets depmod'd.

Then go to the text console [CTRL][ALT][F1]

Log in as root.

Type

service dm stop

Now test X windows...

Type

X

at the prompt and you should see the splash screen disappear leaving you with a totally empty graphical background and movable mouse.

If this works, then

[CTRL][ALT][BACKSPACE] to kill off X

Now test that it operates...

startx

Does your destop come up?

If so, log out from the graphical screen and restart the display manager with

service dm start

No luck

It doesn't change after reboot -- I had tried already but did it again.

X alone : the Nvidia logo appears, and I have the black X cursor that can roam around

startx : nvidia logo appears, stays there, nothing happens. I can move the mouse, which changes randomly from hourglass to arrow (and sometimes text edit cursor if I'm over the Nvidia logo)

And so on.

Normally this is GOOD, however the background should not be black, unless the bit resolution is too low (e.g. 8 bits), rather it should be a light blue.

A black background indicates that the video card has been initialized properly but the framebuffer is not being filled with the correct initial values.

You should try using the Mandrake supplied NVIDIA rpm files instead of those provided on Nvidia's web site and get things going first.

If you are using Community, they are not on the disks, so you will have to download the nvidia-kernel-x.x.x nvidia-x.x.x and glx rpm's from the driver directory on one of the free repositories.
