i tried to upgrade, and also to remove/install the packages, namely

XFree86-4.3-30mdk
XFree86-75dpi-fonts-4.3-30mdk
XFree86-server-4.3-30mdk
XFree86-xfs-4.3-30mdk
libxfree86
XFree86-devel (don't remember the exact name for that one)

using
Code:
rpm -Uv package.rpm
which said "packages already installed, so i tried
Code:
rpm -e package.rpm
as well as
Code:
rpm -e package
and it told me that "no such package installed"... so i did a
Code:
rpm -qa | grep package
and it showed up...

*sigh* this is seeming to be unsolvable.. I'll keep looking around for solutions

ok, so the problem got solved by deleting large files off of the partition containing the /tmp folder, because the command "startkde" brought up errors saying that the /tmp folder was full (i.e. no space left on that partition). I brought the comp to a guy on campus and he then got a hands on look at it.. and diagnosed that as the problem.

Thanks a lot for your help, i really appreciate it! :-D
