X is very very sloww... please help!
Hi, I am running Mandrake 9.2
Here is the problem. After I installed Mdk, with X, everything was great. However, one day after I rebooted, X took over 2 minutes to start up. I then logged in with KDE, and KDE was also very slow. I didn't install anything during that time, except for changing the KDE splash screen =^) Do I have to reinstall mandrake, again? Or is there another solution? Please help! |
Look in KDE to see if a device is 'busy'. Also if you did a new install please run Mandrake Update; it is under packaging, and ensure you are running the latest code. I have 3.1.3, and Xserver is 4.3. I've my nVidia setup; braggin' since I did it just lastnight, SB Live! setup, and all apps seem to function fast/proper.

I guess I could be a device; as soon as I get my crappy DSL up, I'l run the update ;^) Thanks!
EDIT: Well, X is still slow, there are no busy devices and I ran the update. Someone please help! The only solution I found was to reinstall the system, for the 10th time! Any solution is greatly accepted! (Now I'm desparate ;^)) |
try installing the Xfree86 packages again. This is what i do when i am lazy and cannot be bothered fixing the problem.
Hit the rpm source directory and type rpm -Uvh --force --nodeps XFree86* |
Reinstalling the packs worked for the most part ;^)
Thanks! |
Well, it's been awhile since I reinstalled XFree's packs, everything was back to normal, but now X is slow all over again. I have a bit more details this time.
It appears as though KDE experiences speed problems the most. Ice and WindowMaker are relatively fast. I'm not sure about GNOME. Following what I did last time, I reinstalled XFree, still slow. Then I tried to reinstall KDE, still no luck. Any ideas? |
I recently got Mandrake 9.2 and this happened to me also. What I did was edit the /etc/X11/XFConfig-4 file manually and added
Option "noaccel" "false" to my video card section This helped ALOT but now my sound is having problems. EDIT: It seems that the Mandrake control thingy will get rid of it. So every time you have to add it back in |
Editing the config file worked very well. Thanks! My sound is actually pretty decent after editing, kinda choppy at times, but I guess it's ok ;^)
