X Font Server Crash (9.2)

What do I need to do to get the X Font server back
after it crashed. I am running Mandrake 9.2.

The message reads...

"Could not init font path element unix/:-1, removing from list!

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

Typing "xfs &" at the command line should restart xfs however one has to wonder why it crashed in the first place. I used to have this problem years ago and then it was always disk-space related however with modern hard drive sizes I am skeptical. Anyway this should restart the font server after which startx should run fine.

It is strange

Like so many errors before, the message given is not
the source of the real problem.

Oddly, on boot it says that XFontServer has started okay.

Very strange.

Now on boot, X server starts however it cuts out to a black screen then
to the log in screen and the user name and password don;t take.

I'm now stuck with a new problem.

I have the two networked so I can ssh into the problem one and try to
reset the passwords or somehting.

I fixed the original prolbme by adding font paths to the
/etc/X11/XF86/XF86Config-4 file.

Any ideas?

Cool Solved

The X Font Server was not the cause, it was a huge syslog file
I just deleted in /var/log.

I have no idea how it got so big, but that's the end of it.

I think I could use a primer on partitioning about right now.

Any suggestions?
