wrong refresh rate in command line mode?
 

I thought I was starting to become a good friend with my XF86Config-4 file, X runs just perfectly at my desierd resolution with the nvidia drivers. BUT when I leave X I can't see the cli because it jumps back into a mode with a to low refresh rate. (I can start x back up again by typing blindly) If I try Ctrl-Alt-F2 while I'm in x, I also get wrong refresh rate.

Can I change what resolution/refresh rate the cli should use?

I am going to presume you are using a version of Mandrake.
This is a new one for me.
You should be able to set the resolution for the CLI in mcc [The Mandrake Control Center] / boot / boot manager.

When you get to the screen which shows you the menu choices [linux, windows, etc.], select your linux menu choice, click advanced, select the CLI screen resolution of your choice in the drop-down [MnadrakeLinux 10 Community].

If you use an earlier version of Mandrake, there should still be an option for screen resolution, but it may not be in that screen - but it will be in the boot loader utility.

Sorry I am unable to be more specific, but since I do not know which version of Mandrake you are using, or even if you are using Mandrake at all ... :)

Thank you for the reply ernie, I use Mandrake 9.2. Now that I know lilo is the place for changing the command lines resolution I did some serching on that and found that booting with "linux vga=ask" would let me specify how many lines I wanted, I tried 80*50 instead of the default 80*25 and to my amasement it solved the problem, I can now switch back and forward from x to console or eaven leave x completely without getting "out of sync" from my monitor. But now I would like to make this mode permanent, do I edit my lilo.conf file or can I do it with drakboot?

Problem solved!

- Used the boot option linux vga=ask to get a list of modes,
- Wrote down the hex number of the mode I wanted (0F01 for 80x50)
- Changed the vga=normal in my lilo.conf file to vga=0x0f01
- executed lilo -v in the console
- rebooted and everything works fine.
