Wondering if I should try this

From time to time I like to experiment and lately I've been getting in the mood to do so. I did try a Mandrake Live CD several months ago, and most everything seemed to work for me, although someone told me the Live CD was crippled so you could not make any changes to your system and save them.

Is the Live CD the same? Is there a newer version of the Live CD I should try? What is the latest version of Mandriva? And where is a good place to download it?
And that bloody gold star they use for a start button. Can that be changed to something else? I for one would be very interested in making graphical changes to the interface. I need to be able to change the wallpaper, the mouse cursors, the desktop icons, and perhaps the kicker bar, at least that gold star.

Please post some info for me.

And which do I download? I don't know what is meant by x36 or x56. I have a personal computer running Windows 2000 with an Intel D865 PERL motherboard.

And is there just one DVD image that I could download instead of several CD images?

The latest stable version of Mandriva is 2006.0 . You can download it as a 1 DVD or 3 CD installation set. You can also download the Mandriva Move LiveCD. You can download at any of the mandriva mirrors here: http://wwwnew.mandriva.com/en/downloads/mirrors/2006iso . The Mandriva star can be changed by going to the /usr/share/icons/crystalsvg directory and renaming the icon "menuk-mdk" to something else, and renaming the icon "kmenu" to "menuk-mdk". You must change the icon name in each directory (i.e., 32x32, 64x64, 128x128, etc,.) . PCLinuxOS is a Mandriva-based LiveCD (can also be installed to hard drive if desired) that is also very good, and includes more p2p and multimedia software by default. You might want to give that a try too.

Thanks for the help. But as far as changing the gold star to something else, what are my options? I don't suppose there is a Start button like Windows has, so what other images can I change it to?

You can change the star to the default KDE logo (a "K" and gear in a blue bubble) with the current icons using the method above. If you want a different start menu button like you find on Xandros or Linspire, you'll have to install a new kde theme from www.kde-look.org , or make an icon of your own to use there.
