Wireless woes - acx100 module loaded, card detected in harddrake no network device

I've just done a fresh install of Mandrake 10.1 on a Sony Vaio F801 and tried to install my cardbus Binatone WL1000 wireless card (acx100 compatible). The default module for it is loaded (acx100_pci) and I've copied the firmware for it into /lib/modules/acx100_fmwe.
/etc/modprobe.conf shows:
options acx100_pci use_eth_name=1 firmware_dir=/lib/modules/acx100_fmwe/ debug=0x0

lsmod shows the acx100_pci module loaded.

When I do a iwconfig no network devices have wireless extensions and doing a ifconfig -a does not show the wireless card MAC. I've had this set up in Mandrake 10.0 successfully before the update but don't know what I've missed this time.

Does anyone have any pointers to what I've missed? The MDK10.1 acx module is 2.0 pre 8 so I believe it's fairly up to date.

When I inserted my other *wired* cardbus network card Mandrake makes a bleep, however this does not happen with the wireless card but the card is shown in harddrake with the acx100_pci module configured for it

TIA

Benjamin

I've just reinserted the network card and checked /var/log/messages and got:
Jan 2 22:59:03 localhost kernel: acx_pci: probe of 0000:02:00.0 failed with error -5

I've no idea what this means apart from its failed....!
