Already updated my bios and has changed nothing

The windows hard disk will boot fine (thats what im using now) when it is the master. (as i installed mandrake with the windows drive unplugged to ensure it didnt screw with it)

The linux drive will boot fine as master . . . but of course when you tell lilo to run windows it has a fit.

Unfortunatley changin the bios doesnt seem to make any differance.

There should be no need to put lilo on the MBR of my windows drive and make it the master (infact i would refuse to do it on principle) I will not play with the windows drive in anyway as i dont have the time to format/reinstall if something screws up at work.

It should work and it will be possible and its how my system at home works (just might take some time to sort out)

HDA1 (linux with lilo on the MBR)
HDB1 (windows xp)

Thanks all for you help so far.

just found this for suse. My error mesage also has changed recently from a flashing cursor to excalty what the suse page says (chainloader blah blah)

Would like some sort of update cd for mandrake too for those with substandard bios's.

1racerx its not a problem with your hardware or linux. It's a problem with crappy windows. It has to be on the first hard-drive of the system and the first partition. It M$ way of thinking that they are the only OS on the planet that matters. They don't play nice not even with their other OS's

One thing I forgot to mention. I had one system that windows worked fine until I loaded Linux. I read every thing I could find and nothing work. I loaded and reload the machine at least a dozen times I was about ready to give up and leave windows only on it. Then I found that the MB was not reading the Hd correctly and I was losing about 20G of the hard drive and windows is based on the MB settings. Linux on the other hand reads the Hd's directly for their settings and ignores the mother board hard-drive settings. Thats when I noticed that under Linux I had the full amount of room I was supposed to have. The mother board was only 10Months old so I sent it back for a replacement. Thats what fixed my problem. So it made me wonder how many system out their have bad hardware and Windows is to dam stupid to know about it. and all of these fixes everybody comes up with is not to fix linux but fix a another windows problem.

SOLVED!

I have solved my problem in a number of ways. . .

I realize that perhaps I was asking a bit much telling my windows install to just become the slave drive like that.

Now its configured as follows.

/dev/hda1 WinXP NTFS hardrive with untouched MBR (when i installed linux I unplugged it as I was sooo paranoid I would damage it like i did on my home mahcine. As you could understand I dont have the time at work to muck about re-installing and resuing all my data!

/dev/hdb1 MANDRAKE the mbr of this drive has lilo conficured and only has the menu for linux, linuxfb and floppy.

When i want turn the mahcine on it goes into windows unless . . . I press F11 during the bios autodetect and it brings up a bios bootloader and i choose the second HDD.

Alternatley I made a bootdisk using the Mandrake control center by telling it to install grub on /dev/fdo with a 0 or 1 sec wait to select linux. I just leave the disk in most of the time and remove it to go back to windows..

When i get my next work computer upgrade and am installing a new XP etc I will do it properly and create a correct bootloader but for the time being this will be more than adequate

Thanks all for you help/ideas

Daniel.
