Wins Fails To Boot After Mdk10 Was Installed!

Hello guys.....

Did anyone had this problem? and was this cause by lilo now when it boots i gives me a lilo entry.........and it starts up showing all my partitions including the one in a second hard drive which also has xp...

I really dont want to reinstall xp I HAVE TO LOAD ALL MY DRIVERS  wih Linux EVERYTHING WORKS ON THE SPOT! so how can i recover xp? Thanks!

I would like to mention i have AVG virus software running on xp and i think it checks my boot sector, umm??

Try deleting the virus checker when booted into linux

Frank_Drebin 03-11-2004 06:57 AM

It's probably from your bios virus checker. Go into your bios and turn it off as an option when you reboot. The bios visus checker does not like programs messing with the MBR (where you probably stored lilo).

As far as i know the virus checker is disabled becaused i checked it out to make sure that was not the problem...if i dont see any other way of fixing it, what i am thinking of doing is to delete my mdk 10 partition and fix mbr by doing fdisk /mbr and i hope this will work if you have any other suggestions it will me appreciated, thanks.

You can do an fdisk /mbr without removing linux. After you get Windows up, start Mandrake with the installation disk and choose fix loader from the help section.

Ok this is what i did ....

i reformatted my hd thinking i could have a bad sector on my boot sector and reistalled xp and MDK 10 and j still have the same problem, this has never happen before i tried different distros and never had this problem i am wondering if the cd i got for MDK 10 have defective data...who knows!

i will keep searching but will appreciate any help if possible

One solution, when dual booting with Win-XP, is using 2 HD's.

First have the HD you will be using Win-XP on as the first HD.
Install Win-XP, if it is not already installed, or fix the MBR if needed so Win-XP will boot correctly.

Next switch the Win-XP HD to be the second HD, and install Mandrake on the 'new' first HD, and put lilo in the MBR of the first HD [the one with Mandrake, not Win-XP]. This way, there is no conflict between the Win-XP boot loadeer and lilo. I have not used this proceedure myself, but I have heard it works.

YMMV

HTH,

I have to agree on that, using 2 HD's is about the best solution. (Thats if you are fortunate to have 2)

You can take it one step further to play it safe and disconect the HD with XP on it, install Mandrake on to the other drive, once installed reconnect the other HD (while the power is off :) ) then use your bios to select which HD you are going to boot from until a proper fix has been found for Mandrake 10.0

On my Soltek board it's just a matter of pressing the F8 key while booting, then I can choose :D

Yes I do have 2 HD's and Mandrake is on a seperate drive, I am still running 9.1, I will wait until all the bugs are ironed out with 9.2 and with 10.0 before changing :D

i have a similar problem...when booting to XP, it just sits there all black...nothing. no activity either. My board (Soyo KT400) has a option similar to that soltek board...

lets hope there is a good fix. :-)

Do you at least get a blinking cursor (like I do)?

EDIT: I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do this or not, but here's a link to a thread I started yesterday outlining all the problems I've been having and what I tried to do to fix it. I thought I'd post it here just in case someone missed it.

I still haven't had any luck.

TravisOSF 03-13-2004 11:22 PM

yes, now that i think about it, i do believe i get the blinking cursor. if i can get wine to do what i want and if i can get a little more skilled with linux (been on it for 3 weeks now), i think i'll have my head enough above water to say screw windows. i am going to miss a couple of games if that happens though...so my reasons for wine are that... :D
