wine-pthread runs rampant

Every time I start something to do with wine, including menu items, has the effect that wine-pthread runs rampant adding multi process threads and has to be killed.
How can I run wine sucessfuly and stop this pthreads thing?

you don't stop the pthreads (or kthreads) cause its a process that needs to run in the
background for wine to function properly .... so if you do kill them processes i am sure you
have seen that your programs are shutting down, if in fact you had them running when
you killed the processes. ...

When I start a wine menu item e.g wine/configurator, or try to start a program, wine prog.exe, no window/panel appears. I check gsm, top or whatever, and wine-pthreads has 50+ entries and growing 4 or 5 a second. If I donīt stop them will they just continue?
