Windows XP, Mandrake, partitions

Hi,

I have two partitions right now on my Windows XP Home machine: a 35 GB Windows XP NTFS partition with my Windows stuff on it and a 2 GB unallocated partition that I have recovered from a previously failed Mandrake installation attempt.

This time, I want to install Mandrake properly, so I want to make the partitions using Partition Magic and then tell Drakx to use existing partitions.

Can someone give me instructions (detailed, if possible) on how I should partition the drives and how I should go about installing Mandrake? Please help, I don't want to mess up again! (Last time, I relied on Google

Thanks,
dindi

Just use the partitioning tool during the Mandrake install. If you want to use Partiton Magic, make a / (root) partition of 1.75 gigs and a swap of 250 megs.

I would use the partitioner during install and make the partition either ext3 or reiserfs file system.

I would use the Auto allocate function if you have not already partitioned the area, or if you have, just delete teh existing partitions and then use it.

However, I would like to note, if you are installing 9.1 it comes with 3 CD's which is roughly 1.5 GB of packed info. So 2GB may not be enough for what you want. That said, you, of course, do not have to install all the packages from 9.1, I myself have all client packages and did not install any servers, and this is what df shows for me.

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda5 5.8G 1.7G 3.9G 30% /
/dev/hda7 28G 114M 28G 1% /home

Be sure to select expert install. You can then select individual packages to limit total mb used.

MDK has install documentation on its website. http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/
