Will these soundcard(s) work in Mandrake?

Hi everyone,

sorry to bother bout soundcards but I am considering going ahead and buying a new soundcard for my mandrake pc (will use it for my new custom pc and just put old riptide modem back in hp when my new one is finished) and I was reading the official mandrake hardware compatability site and looking at newegg.com and found these inexpensive soundcards, a creative labs sound blaster live 5.1 pci for 22.49 and an aopen cobra aw850 5.1 pci for 12.20 . On the mandrake site it shows a bunch of aw models that are supported (and of course soundblaster is also )but i'm not sure if mandrake will support the model i get. i'd like to buy the aopen one (limited budget * booo *) but i just dont wanna buy it and it won't work under mandrake knowing i could have spent a bit more and gotten a sound blaster live which has/had a greater probability of working under mandrake. What do you all think? Has anyone had success with Aopen soundcards under mandrake? Thanks

soundcards in mandrake

when, i was installing mandrake on my pc, the sound card was not really detected. when i searched the internet i found out about someone who did it using alsa drivers. why not check it out. it worked fine for me. there's a download page in there. don't worry about the installation notes because it is bundled with the file you are going to download. also, i remember that theone who posted it said that you could really tweak the configuration of the sound card so that it could work well with the distro. check it out. most probably, there would be someone out there who had figured it out.

by the way, i am also a newbie but i find it fun doing the tweaking.....

The SBLive is a breeze to install in Mandrake.

Basically plug it in and install Mandrake.

Done.

I'd opt for it instead.

Thanks guys I currently have a Rockwell Riptide soundcard/modem/game controller combo in there (basically a winmodem). I did dl some drivers but they would not work. They did not have any updated ones for Mandrake 10, just 9,9.1,9.2 and 2 generic ones which they said were for distros they were unsupported or if the Mandrake kernel was a custom one. I checked the alsa page out and they don't have anything for Riptide soundcards there I think I will go with the
