I have a widescreen LCD monitor, although it`s widescreen, I have the display set to 1024x768 @ 75hz, this gives a normal looking desktop, fits in the middle of the widescreen monitor with black borders left and right, this is intentional, I prefer it in this mode for editing webpages etc.

My question is :-

How can I modify system so that when I`m playing a DVD using Totem, Xine or Mplayer and switch to full screen mode, it changes to a widescreen screen resolution, 1280x768 would be perfect. Then revert back to normal when exiting full screen mode.

At the moment full screen mode in the above mentioned players view at the normal desktop resolution (1024x768)

You could always try KDE's "screen resize & rotate" tool.

Yep that`s what I will do for now, only problem is that changing the desktop resolution (and back) splatters my icons all over the place! not a big deal I guess.

In KDE 3.5 you are able to lock your icons. This is done by right-clicking and selecting the option from the context menu ;-). You'll have to wait.
