wide flatscreen will not allow horizontal position to be set
 

Hi, I have just bought a Yuraku YV19WP3 19 inch wide flat screen. In the menu I can access the horizontal position setting but it is on 255 and will not accept any change. I have tried the factory reset with no result. If I boot this screen on an old windows 98 PC I can access and change this setting. The interference with the screen is coming from Linux. I have tried several changes in the KDE config, still no result. The horizontal setting means that I am missing one inch of the left hand display and have a 1 inch black bar on the right side of the screen. Has anyone got any ideas or even an answer please? I am running Mandriva 2007 official.

These are not KDE settings. You need to run the Graphical Configurater from MCC. The problem lies in /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. The garphical tool can re-configure it. This is an older version of Mandriva. You may want to consider installing a later version. I would guess the installer would detect the new hardware, and configure the file for you.

Thank you. I have tried various settings in MCC and cannot get anything that works. I have got it on 1020 x 768 flat screen. Have you any suggestions where to start? I am pretty well versed in computers and Mandriva but this one is a real sticker.

1024x768 is a 4x3 size screen. Are there any 9x16 possibilities?

What video card do you have? If you go to MCC --> Hardware --> Browse hardware configuration, it should list your video card. Do you have an Nvidia card or other accelerated graphics card? What driver is loaded?

I know you have a new monitor, was the graphics card changed?

The video chip is an Nvidia Gforce GE6100 and is on the motherboard. The correct driver is loaded. The only change was adding the new monitor.

I suspect then you will not have the correct modeline entries to support the wide screen. You can find out what is there with the following command 'xrandr -q' ( without quotes ). Here is what I see, my monitor is 4x3 format 19".

You need to have the appropriate entries for a wide monitor. There is a program to generate them, I have never had too, so this is about all I know about it. The program is called gtf.

I would bet if you installed a later version of Mandy, it would pick up the wide screen.

OK, thank you very much. Using xrandr I can see the values will not support the new screen. I used gtf x=1440 y=900 refresh=60 and it appeared to accept the command but there was no change and the xrandr -q still gave me the old result. I think I will upgrade to mand 2009 and then we will see what transpires.

I have upgraded to Mandriva 2009 and it did NOT correct this fault. The wide screen has gone back and I have a conventional flat panel now. The wide screen works perfectly on windoze but will not run on Mandriva Linux. I consider this now closed but it would be nice to know what the problem was so as others might benefit. Thank you.

The problem could be either hardware compatibility or the configuration of the xserver. A third issue could be the ability to detect the correct model of screen. Bleeding edge hardware may not work at first, that is why you will often see the recommendation to look in the HCL list before you buy, and assume it will work.

Just for fun, try a www.google.com/linux search on this make and model. I got one hit, this thread. Does that tell you anything???

Most modern monitors will work perfectly if "Plug 'n Play" is selected as the monitor type in drakx11.

When choosing the resolution you may have to select "others" and then scroll through the list again to find 1440x900

Edit: If monitor-edid, run as root, returns a preferred modeline then "Plug 'n Play" should work.
