why isn't the alsa service running on mandrake 10.1

The service fails to start on mandrake 10.1 running 2.11.6 kernel. I tried reinstalling the library and driver but it still doesm't boot up. After KDE has loaded is says it cant find the dsp file and it isn't there but when i probe the sound card the dsp file appears but disapppears after reboot why?

am running 1.0.9rc3 alsa drivers. After probing the sound card then restarting KDE i have sound comming out of speakers but no sound while playing cd. Also very poor sound quality with mp3. Also i keep having to use the alsa mixer to adjust volume cos it keeps resetting to 0

Have you tried...

Going into the mandrake control center -> hardware -> look at and configure the hardware -> select your soundcard -> run config tool

Then select the ALSA driver, these generally start with "snd-" while the old OSS drivers don't (e.g. the ALSA driver for EMU10K1 is "snd-emu10k1" while the OSS driver is just "emu10k1") That'll make Mandrake use ALSA instead of OSS.

Hope this helps!

modprobe snd-ca0106;modprobe snd-pcm-oss;modprobe snd-mixer-oss;modprobe snd-seq-oss
thats is the command am using to probe the sound card but even if i probe it hard drake says no sound card detected when i run the config tool

does alsa support the sound blaster live 7.1 card. It didn't say it did but like i said it did give me sound. hard drake still odesn't detect my card GRRRRRRR
