With my mandrake 10.1 community on my machine, i thought it was time to upgrade.
So I downloaded and burned the iso of the free version of Mandriva 2006 and installed.
It worked fine for 15 minutes after login and then it just crashes, even if ing do nothing, open no application.
What's wrong?
Is my download currupt? But The installation part went well without error messages, and the md5sums check ok.
Hmmmm. Whe you say it crashes, what do you mean? Is it KDE that is crashing? Or Gnome? Are you running xorg automatically? etc etc <<< more details needed
Well, what happens is that the display just freezes, and the computer wont answer to mouse or keyboard. I'm forced to do a violent reboot...
I'm using Kde and running Xorg automatically.
Thanks!
Well, indeed the videocard (and lan connection) was the only thing the installer didnt do automatically...I just chose the generic ATI Radeon...is it possible this is a problem with the video card control?
hmm... well for now, try to use the Standard VESA driver to see if that's the actual problem or not. the VESA driver should not cause any errors or crashes. If your computer still crashes after this, then it's not the video card.
I'll keep researching this for you, but take a look around there, you might find someone who can help you as well, or if you post a thread, someone might help you out
Good luck and I'll get back to you if I find anything else.
Hey Purelithium, thanks a lot for your advice, i'll try that standard VESA driver you mention, and check the mandriva forum.
One last thing though, does the dimensions of the display "1024x1400", "700x1024" ...i choose may have something to do with this problem? This is the only thing i'm not choosing like mandrive tells me too. If I go with Mandriva's choice, the icons and everything on screen seems "too big"...
Yes I have a similar problem. I was running 2005LE no problem. So I too decided on the upgrade to 2006. I just downloaded the iso's burned them check the md5's everthing was alright and accepted all the defaults during the upgrade and it installed ok. Now I get radom crashes from firefox 1.0.7 and 1.5. Yet under 2005 everthing was fine. I haven't made any changes whatsoever to the machine other than the upgrade. Any Ideas?
Open console and type in "top" to see which process uses how much cpu. I had several problems with Kat on my server, and uninstalled it. That solved my issues. But it never cause mandriva to freez. Just a little tip.
I gave that a try Firefox was using 0.3 of CPU time about the amount as Konsole wich doesn't seem extraordinary? Mem usage was 7.1 under load I think.
Incidently a friend of mine seems to think the issue lies with the way that Mandriva has implemented udev. I don't know.
