Where are modules placed?

Where are modules saved when they are compiled (I just compiled ALSA modules) and hwta do they look like or end in? And is there any specific place modules should be in order for modprobe to find them?

Installed modules are usually under /lib/modules/`uname -r` - are you getting errors with modprobe?
