What version of XFree86 comes with Mandrake 10.1 ?

Need to know that for the sake of choosing the right package of the ATI driver...

I tried running the script ATI has offered in their site (check.sh), but it tells me is can't detect the XFree86 version ?!?!?

I'm a n00b in Linux, could it mean that XFree86 is not installed?
Or maybe XFree is critical for X and must be installed (or a replacement) ?

Thanks for your patience!
Tom

http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/10.1/features/ - straight from the horse's mouth. No XFree - Xorg 6.7.0

Well, isn't Xorg based on XFree ???
According to ATI (http://www.ati.com/developer/altoschart.pdf), Xorg 6.7 is based on XFree 4.3.99-12

That's enough for me in the XFree aspect of the ATI driver requirment.

But, ATI also say that their latest driver supports linux kernel 2.4 and that kernel 2.6 support driver will be released in the future.
Does that means that the latest ATI Radeon driver can't be installed in MDK 10.1 ?
Or maybe it just means that the driver is not optimal for kernel 2.6.x but can still work in a linux distribution based on 2.6.x ?

It doesn't matter - try running xf86config on a system with Xorg installed and let us know how you got on.

Xorg is a fork of the last but one release of XFree86, done so because of the disgreements with XFree's licensing.

As far as the driver/kernel question: it probably means that the driver will not be able to take full advantage of Kernel 2.6 and upwards. It should still work though.
