Thanks. It was when i installed the 9.2 not when i downloaded it.That i fryed the drive as it was an LG cdrom. I know how to burn etc iso`s.
I will try the update cd

I can't believe installing Linux would fry a drive either.
I have, of course, had flaky CD-ROM drives that wouldn't read some CDs.

you should read the thread at the top of the Mandrake forum then.

Astonishing! Why would someone make a drive only partly ATAPI compatable, I wonder?
I am glad that I bought my hardware with Linux in mind, so I avoided the traps that boxes bundled with Windows set for you in Linux.
At least, it shouldn't bother my drives if I upgrade as I looked for fully compatable ATAPI drives when I built them.
I had to toss my old CD-rom and modem and video card from my first box which I stupidly bought bundled with Windows.

go to a magazine shop.... buy a magazine and get it with the magazine. that is what i did. cost me 6 bucks.. for mdk9.2 and a magazine... worth every penny because it has all kinds of hints and tricks to help the noobs out.
