weird problem with adsl and printer

hi all

i'm passed to linux two days ago, and i'm surprised...an cool security feeling
Mandrake 9.1, commercial distribution

but for now i have two problems:

first, when i connect my adsl modem, i load the firmware in the matrice as:
root # /usr/local/bin/startmodem | tee log.txt

all works fine, and i manage to connect.
however, i need to load firmware for all the new sessions, because my modem shut down. it's annoying. how i could save the firmware?

second, i need to connect my printer. (hp psc 1210)
i found in hp site the path to go, but when i tape "./configure" it come:

[root@localhost hpijs-1.4.1]# ./configure
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

so, i think i need gcc.
but mandrake 9.1 as already him installed, because when i select suppress programm i have gcc and gcc2 in place.
i tried to search in additional packages, but i could'nt find him.

thanks for your help

First off, I haven't had this problem with ADSL, but then things in Canada are probably different from France. Also, I don't turn my modem off so I don't have to log in again each time. My provider IDs me by my MAC address on my adapter not by a logon script. So not much help, I'll bet.

As for the second issue there is no need to download a driver for an HP printer from HP's site. Go back to your disks and install CUPS and the CUPS drivers. They will have everything you need to get your printer up and running.
