webcams & enterprise 9.2 kernel

one day the system should/shall be dual xeon & 2gb, audigy2 + 9800 Radeon 128M
(slightly down graded ARs 'God' box.)
well not really, currently it's got a sb5.1live & a geforce 4 128M
as a result of hanging on the install with the radeon.

discovered i only got enterprise kernel install because of the 2gb ram
- should have expected it though

nothing at all out of the either webcam (usb) logitech + phillips
nothing out of bt8xx based tv card
all known good in other box's, smp intel & an amd all 256M/512M ram

so i ran up the 'thac' multimedia kernel' with 'mem=750M' added to
all lilo.conf stanza's
now i see a picture from one of the webcams( xawtv), certainly more than from the enterprise kernel.

the question is why???

different way of addressing/memory mapping?
also one or two of std drivers give an error cdrom.o.gz is one

also has anyone ever managed to get a joystick working on 9.1, istr
once in maybe 7.x/8.x versions

many thanks
