VNC How do I do this in Mandriva 2007?

Hi,

I recently upgraded one of my machines to 2007. When this machine was at 2006, I used the xorg vnc.so module to allow me to connect to the root display and login, do stuff, logout. Unfortunately, I haven't found this module in 2007. Here is where it used to be in 2006: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/vnc.so

I made use of this by modifying the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and adding the necessary options. This brings me to the following questions:

1) Is vnc.so supposed to be there and the Mandriva packages just don't have it?
2) Has the vnc.so method been replaced by something else?
2a) Does this something else behave in the same way? I want to be able to see the login screen as if I turned on my monitor. I want to see the mouse move if someone is actually at the monitor and I'm not.

Thanks!
R

If you want to find it, make use of the installed-by-default slocate package.
Code:
#Update the slocate database
root@box # updatedb

#Now search for it
root@box # locate vnc.so
Aside from that, I'm pretty sure there's a way to setup VNC through the Mandriva Control Centre.

Hi,
You can simply use Krdc, tightVNC or whatever to connect remotely. You need only to enable VNC server on remote machine and adjust your firewall settings. For me VNC is work great.

Valentin

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I realized after reading them that I didn't provide enough information. So this my attempt to fill in the blanks.

1) a "locate" of vnc.so turns up nothing
2) a search of all installable media for vnc.so turns up nothing. This was done using the rpmdrake tools.
3) This used to be part of the installable xorg server package.

Since it doesn't appear to exist in it's prior form, how do I:
* Start VNC against the display:0 window? (By the way, I think tightvnc uses display:1-n or so which isn't the root window)
* See the root login screen as displayed by kdm or gdm or xdm?

Will x11vnc do what I need?

Hi,
You must install all packages with vnc in name. Then you can use inside your running X-server connection to the remote PC using for example Tightvnc ("vncviewer" in console) with IP address and screen: for example 192.168.1.5:0 Then you will be prompted for password for this connection. I hope that password is added from you before connection on remote PC. This can be done via several ways: 1. most easy is using program "krfb" and then mark fields "allow uninvited connections and then enter password at bottom. If you want to have full control mark also "Allow uninvited connections to control the desktop" 2. via console "vncpasswd" then enter password and starting of vnc server on remote PC's using command: "vncserver" This must be done on all remote PC's before you try to connect. If you plan to manage Windows PC then you need program "Krdc" and choose protokol "rdp" for example: rdp:/192.168.1.5:0

Regards, Valentin

Solved!

Thanks for the suggestions! The solution that worked for me was to install the 'x11vnc' package. This package allows attaching a vncviewer to a vncserver which displays what the physical device (monitor) shows.

Normally, this is intended to be run by the user after he/she logs in. However, it can be made to run in a variety of ways by root which allows for the display of the gdm login screen (as I wanted). I chose to run it as a service with xinetd.

Thanks again!
